A Makers Mark private barrel tonight with 5 French cuvee staves and 5 Makers 46. While some barrel picks are variations in profile or proof, the Makers Mark programme can really push the whisky. in different flavour directions. I'd say Makers Mark is a go to bourbon for me, but... I don't love it. The proof is a little hot for me, and the french oak seems to add an aniseed/liqorish note. They're also an astringent, herbal spice aspect which overpowers the soft, sweet MM character. I'll be honest, it's a me problem and the whisky has a depth and character I've not had with Makers Mark elsewhere. I'll keep going with it though, see how I get on.
