Another lovely evening, tasting some Dalmore expressions… 12YO, 15YO & Cigar Malt. 12YO - I like that it’s got some degree of complexity even for a 12YO (many brands seems to have 12YOs that focus more on simple flavour and being easy to drink. There is a bit of heat/bite on the swallow though. 15YO - Long one of my favourite Dalmore expressions (when you factor in value for money and good flavour profile). I feel over the years, this expression has lost some of its sweetness. I like this. It makes the dram more balanced and allows the lighter secondary flavours to come to the fore. CIGAR MALT - I’ve never been a fan of Cigar Malt expressions from any distillery. They normally are unbalanced, having one dominant flavour that is big enough to stand up to a cigar pairing. With this Dalmore Cigar Malt, I don’t find it offensive at all, it’s a good if slightly boring drink. For a novice drinker, I think this expression will be popular, especially in Asia, where many enjoy a big, luscious and slightly sweet whisky. Overall, I enjoy The Dalmore expressions. Are they slightly pricey? Perhaps but every brand has a niche they want to position their drink at and The Dalmore is obviously positioned as a luxury pour. Does the brand deserve the hate of snobby connoisseurs because they use E150A (caramel colouring)? I think not - I judge a drink based on the taste profile and I do enjoy most Dalmore expressions. #whiskydev #dalmorewhisky #singlemalt #Scotch #whisky
