Hmm… today’s dram of the day is highly unusual for me; a GlenAllachie that’s not quite to my liking. I usually like most of what GlenAllachie puts out and I do usually enjoy Oloroso matured/finished whiskies. The label says that it’s an 11YO that is “sherry matured” and “Oloroso cask finished”. This was a limited edition bottling for GlenAllachie’s Malaysian distributor. The nose has your typical Oloroso notes of burnt raisins, chocolate and oak. There is some sour note that I can’t quite put my finger on. On the palate… this is the major disappointment, I get an intense tannic bitterness from the wood that overwhelms the expected burnt raisin, dark chocolate, cinnamon flavours. Urrggghh. Sadly, just not for me. Perhaps I’ll experiment with making this into a mixed drink - 1 part whisky, 2 parts Fever Tree Indian Tonic and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.
