My local Total Wine is selling Ardnahoe Inaugural 5Yr Single Malt in a 700ml bottle for $69.99. Why would I pay that much when I can buy, in the same store, Ardbeg Wee Beastie (5Yr old) Single Malt Scotch Whisky in a 750ml bottle for $49.99? This is the problem I have with the Scotch whisky industry - that they expect us to pay so much for something so young. It defies supply and demand/basic economics. That's why I've only bought one bottle of Kilchoman in my life - and only because I got it at cost. (NAS is a whole other problem with the industry.) I understand that nascent distilleries need to raise money. But not on my back. And do the prices ever come down once distilleries become financially stable and independent, and start releasing aged stock, i.e., 12 Yr old? No. Just look at, again, Kilchoman. Machir Bay is a NAS that is sold in the same store for $75.99. That's why I don't care if there is another Whisky Loch - because distilleries have it coming after treating the consumer like their personal piggie-bank for the last 20 years. I say, bring back the 1990s.
