I’d bought a few of the “2nd tier” Irish Whiskies in the last two weeks (Jameson Triple Triple, Kilbeggan Triple Cask, Bushmill’s Blackbush) and realized I’ve been ignoring some of my Irish single malts and oddball finished bottles. Tonight I’m starting with this Glendalough Single Cask finished in Canteiro Aged Madeira cask. Bottled at 42%. I’ve enjoyed their pot still and loved their Mizunara 13 so much that I’ve got a 2nd bottle in storage. This was a Binny’s (Chicagoland) pick. It’s surprisingly flavorful with plenty of varied flavors. Typical flavors and aromas to start, but then some oak and cigar notes pop in. Banana and nutmeg also show up. Tangy bright finish. Never goes sour. Label says 3 years in bourbon casks before the finish. Maybe could’ve used a touch more time in the first cask… But it’s punchy and complex enough for $45 or so. Perhaps not a “buy” but if you see it in the wild it is definitely worth a taste.
