Here’s another American Single Malt. No need for any introduction. It’s a @malloysglenellyn pick, and it’s on the shelf. Let’s go! Virginia Distilling Brewer’s Coalition American Single Malt Bottled in Bond Finished in Goose Island Bourbon County Stout barrels. 100 Proof (50-ish) Nose: When I first opened it, there was a very significant green apple jolly rancher note. It’s been a week since the first pour, and now it’s opening up well. Bright sweet aromas of green apple, lemon, honey and sweet barley, along with deeper and richer aromas of brown sugar, a little coffee and caramels. With some time, the creamy aspect of the stout comes through the nose. Taste: The palate is just as complex as the nose, with the bright sweet fruit flavors with the rich brown sugar flavors. Any coffee or cocoa stout notes are just as subtle as it was in the beer. This is still very much a fruit forward American Single Malt that Virginia Distilling is known for. It’s the finish that reminds you of the stout barrel influence. A few drops of water mellows the bright notes, opens up more coffee bean flavors and almost brings out a slight anise note that is subtle and very enjoyable. This one is so unique, it requires being in the mood for not just a single malt, but a unique one at that. Thankfully, tonight it is hitting well. Don’t be afraid of green apple and black licorice, just because you haven’t had it before. I can’t wait for this to evolve in the bottle. My Grade: B+ Cheers!
