I mentioned an old Victor “Trader Vic” Bergeron bourbon cocktail that I thought would work better with smoky blended Scotch, which is really just describing a Churchill. So tonight here is a Churchill. 1-1/2 ounces Monkey Shoulder, 1/2 ounces each of sweet vermouth, orange liqueur, lime juice. Stir, don’t shake, serve neat in a coupe or Nick & Nora. Created by Savoy Hotel bartender Joe Gilmore for frequent bar guest Sir Winston Churchill, likely in the late 1950s. It’s sort of a smashed-up Manhattan and daiquiri in honor of Churchill’s American mother and his favorite cocktail.
