Laphroaig had an “incident” Wednesday night that sounded a lot like an explosion, but apparently wasn’t. Here’s the official statement from the distillery. There was no explosion. There was a pressure issue with the boiler that resulted in a loud noise and some impact to the steam generation system on Wednesday evening. Our Visitor Centre at Laphroaig was temporarily closed on Thursday to allow for a full and thorough assessment, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our staff and site before we re-opened the Visitor Centre as normal this morning (Friday, 21st). The Visitor Centre has been open as usual today and distillery tours are unaffected. Aspects of site operations (e.g. our floor maltings) are fully operational. Some repairs to our steam generation system are required, but we expect to be fully operational again in a matter of days.
