One of Scotch Whisky’s most enduring figures has died. Hedley Wright, the chairman of Springbank owner J&A Mitchell Ltd. died August 5 at the age of 92. Mr. Wright was the company’s chairman for more than 60 years, and single-handedly led the battle to keep Campbeltown as one of Scotland’s whisky regions when it was in jeopardy of being merged into the Lowlands a number of years ago. According to a statement from the company, no changes will be seen in the operations of Springbank and Glengyle distilleries, as Mr. Wright had made succession plans many years ago. I believe that involved putting the company into a trust to benefit the people of Campbeltown.
